Learn the
foundations

You do not need a studio brief to practise design. Start with the notice, presentation or invitation already waiting on your desk.

A short course gives you a vocabulary. A real project gives that vocabulary a job.

Canva’s Graphic design essentials is an introductory course covering design elements and principles, typography, colour and mood boards. It is a practical starting point for someone who uses templates but wants to understand the choices inside them.

Those figures describe the provider’s course, not the time you will need to practise. Leave room to pause, make a version of your own and revise it. The aim is to explain a design decision, not simply finish a video.

Course details checked against Canva’s official listing on 27 October 2026. The provider may update its material.

Course programme

The published programme moves from design foundations to colour and mood boards, with explanation and application lessons.

Elements and principles

Distinguish the things on the page from the way you arrange them. In your own exercise, ask which object attracts attention and whether related information sits together.

Typography and colour

Study the course topics, then limit your first project to a small set of choices. A readable title and a reliable colour pairing are more useful than a collection of effects.

A direction before a layout

Mood boards help you collect references before committing to a finished design. Our companion exercise asks you to connect each reference to a decision you can actually use.

These exercises are Carmavi’s own study prompts. They are not official assignments, assessment answers or a substitute for the course.

Course access, lessons, account settings and the optional certification test are managed by the provider.

Open the official course page to review the current lessons and access conditions. Canva lists a beginner level and a total duration of 53 minutes; allow extra time to apply the ideas to your own draft.

You need to log in to Canva to take its certification test. Carmavi does not collect course fees, enrol learners or issue certificates. Paid assets and subscription features inside the design tool are separate from this learning guide.

Bring one
small project

Choose something you can finish without a client: a book-club notice, a slide introducing a hobby, or an invitation to a fictional event. Keep the words and audience fixed while you experiment with the design.

  1. Write the job. What should someone understand or do after seeing it?
  2. Watch with a question. Look for an idea that could solve one problem in your draft.
  3. Change one decision. Try the size, spacing, alignment or colour. Keep a copy of the earlier version.
  4. Ask for a reading. Show it to someone without explaining it first. What did they notice? What could they not find?

You can practise these decisions on paper before opening a design tool. If you use Canva, choose assets you are entitled to use and check whether any selected feature requires a paid plan.

Is it for you?

This route suits a beginner making presentations, community notices, personal projects or simple social graphics. It is particularly useful if you can change a template but cannot yet explain why one layout works better than another.

It is less suitable if you need advanced pre-press production, a portfolio critique, one-to-one tuition or a formal design qualification. A short introductory course cannot stand in for those things.

Use a screen large enough to compare versions comfortably. Keep a few reference images, your own draft and a way to take notes nearby. You do not need to buy materials to try the exercises on this website.
